A Glimpse into My Transformation Journey

Picture this: I’m hiding from my children, I don’t want them to see what I’m doing. A large mirror stretches across the wall above the double sinks. With a towel securely tucked under the door and the window ajar, I stand on the edge of the bathtub. Inhaling deeply on my cigarette, I exhale the smoke out the window. As I turn away from the brisk November draft, I see my full length reflection in the mirror.

Here I am, 33 years old and sneaking a smoke, just like I did when I was 10. Yes, that’s when I had my first cigarette. When I was 17, my mother died of cancer, and I was smoking two packs a day.

A Pivotal Moment of Change

The reflection in the mirror on November 6, 1983, was far from glamorous. The emergence of crows’ feet around my eyes and fine wrinkles around my mouth—certainly not the image of smoking portrayed in magazines and on billboards. I asked myself, “Who am I?” I knew I couldn’t be the woman in the mirror. That moment, I made a life-changing decision and flushed my last cigarette down the toilet.

The Battle to Quit Smoking

If you’ve ever tried to quit smoking, you’re well aware of the challenges it presents.

My most intense cravings for a cigarette were right after dinner. To replace this habit, I created Sacred Practices. I took my dog, Thunder, for a brisk walk—12 and a half minutes—the same amount of time it took for me to have that damn cigarette. Deep inhales and deep exhales of clean, crisp Thunder Bay air in November filled my lungs.

In less than a week, I noticed the skin in my mouth was replacing itself with healthier tissue. After a month, my complexion cleared up, and my cheeks regained their rosy glow. Breathing became easier, and I was no longer short of breath.

I can’t ignore the financial benefit. I started smoking when a large pack cost a mere $1.10. Today, cigarettes are over $18 per pack. Using a pack-a-day average price of $5, I calculated that over the past 40 years, I’ve saved at least $183,000.

And the hugs, there were lots of hugs. Even if you came to the show for the first time, a “movirgin,” you always left with the warmth of embraces and a sense of belonging.

What’s most inspiring is how these stories connected individuals and ignited a sense of hope, love, and community. The experience was about more than hosting a show; it was about facilitating the discovery of someone’s own unique story.

A Scorpio Birthday

My birthday is November 18. I’m a Scorpio, and my Animal Totem is the Snake.

Each year, as I celebrate another trip around the sun, I take the time for reflection, appreciation, and gratitude.
